Rooibos Tea

Rooibos is a shrub native to South Africa which is
cultivated for its shoots and leaves. Rooibos means
“red bush,” a reference to the startling red color
which the leaves attain after they have been oxidized.

Rooibos has been called a “red tea” when it is not a true
tea, since it does not come from the Camellia sinensis plant.
The Rooibos bush, known formally as Aspalathus linearis,
thrives best in the Western Cape Province, where it has been
grown and used for centuries by the native Khoisan people.
It is classified as a tisane, an herbal brew, and it is
handled very differently than tea is. The processing encourages
oxidation, which will ultimately turn the leaves a rich red color.
A cup of Rooibos has a slightly nutty and sweet flavor, and it
is loaded with antioxidants, much more than Green Tea
without the caffeine.
